This study examines 105 news websites from both legacy journalism organizations and digital-native publishers with high traffic levels, with particular attention paid to those with the most visitor numbers.
Threaded discussions
Threaded discussions are an effective form of computer-mediated communication (CMC) which organizes discussion messages into topic-based threads to allow participants to easily follow and reply to specific comments or points of view. They’re frequently employed on online venues like message boards, blogs and email list servs.
Threaded discussions offer many advantages to both project discussions, knowledge sharing, and focused communication across a variety of professional contexts. Furthermore, threaded conversations help reduce clutter and confusion associated with traditional linear conversations.
Researchers have also examined the effect of threaded discussions on classroom participation. They discovered that those participating shared more ideas than those who did not take part, suggesting threaded discussions can encourage quiet students to participate and provide an alternative form of face-to-face interactions.
Video
Video can provide an engaging user experience that exceeds that of text or audio alone. Video also works well to build community bonds; viewers will become better acquainted with issues and characters featured in a story and more likely to feel invested in its success by contributing feedback to it.

Text
Digital news articles often consist of lengthy texts that offer plenty of text-based information to readers. Newspapers sometimes also include charts and photos alongside the text for further clarity of a story or topic; threaded discussions provide another avenue to express reader opinions and inform writers who want to improve future articles; for instance, readers might comment on an article about a local crime and suggest including additional details regarding weapon type usage as a great way to keep readers engaged and up-to-date with latest happenings.
The Reuters Institute Digital News Report, underwritten by Google as part of their News Initiative, is the world’s largest comparative survey on digital news consumption, utilized by journalists, industry professionals and researchers worldwide.
